Quick Building Answer
Official marketing promises gothic cottage customization — demo PR confirms homestead decorating. House upgrades unlock after Ridge's Fix the Roof quest at Howling Hammer (Mon–Fri 18:00–00:00 per preview guides). Up to 4 upgrades add one room each — first tier from community guides at 8,000g + 100 Wood + 25 Stone across multiple guides; check in-game before spending. Howling Hammer accepts four building orders: well 1,500g, barn 4,000g, mill 8,000g, greenhouse 50,000g — each takes one night to build (from community guides; well and barn match across several guides, mill and greenhouse less cross-checked). Furniture prices and blueprint costs are not listed on this site.
Build order: Complete Fix the Roof → buy first house upgrade (gold and materials reported by community guides — not verified on this site) → order well → build barn → save for mill and greenhouse. Each upgrade adds one room; large buildings cannot rotate after placement. Furniture prices and blueprint costs are not listed yet — see decorating guide for placement rules.
How to Upgrade Your House — Fix the Roof First
House upgrades unlock after completing Ridge's Fix the Roof quest at Howling Hammer. Once unlocked, you can purchase up to 4 house upgrades in sequence — each one adds a new room. First upgrade is reported at 8,000g + 100 Wood + 25 Stone across community guides — check in-game.
Unlock: Fix the Roof
Ridge at Howling Hammer gives the Fix the Roof quest — complete it to unlock house upgrades. Subsequent upgrades are purchased directly at Howling Hammer without additional quests (community guides).
Up to 4 upgrades
Each house upgrade adds one room. Community data mining reports a maximum of 4 upgrades in total. After the fourth upgrade, your cottage is at max size and unlocks exterior customization options (community guides).
Each upgrade = 1 room
Every upgrade adds one new room to your cottage — you choose how to furnish each. Upgrade costs increase with each tier — gold and material amounts are from community guides; confirm costs in-game.
Upgrade safety: Patches 1.1.41 and 1.1.44 addressed upgrade-related save and crate bugs — still follow the safety checklist below.
Howling Hammer hours: Ridge runs the shop Monday–Friday, 18:00–00:00 (community guides). Plan your upgrade visits around the shop schedule.

House Upgrade Safety — Clear Storage Crates First
Marvelous USA patch notes documented three house-upgrade risks on retail builds: Storage Crate contents lost (P-141-B18), decor item quality lost (P-141-B19), and saves that failed to load after upgrade (P-144-02). Patch 1.1.41 fixed crate and decor-quality loss; patch 1.1.44 fixed the post-upgrade load failure — these were bugs, not current behavior on updated builds. Emptying crates and backing up your save before Ridge builds the next room is still cheap insurance.
| Risk (was) | Fixed in | Fact ID |
|---|---|---|
| House upgrade caused Storage Crate contents to disappear | 1.1.41 | P-141-B18 |
| House upgrade reset decor item quality | 1.1.41 | P-141-B19 |
| Save failed to load after house upgrade | 1.1.44 | P-144-02 |
Pre-upgrade checklist
- 1
Empty Storage Crates — before purchasing an upgrade at Howling Hammer, move items out of Storage Crates on your plot into House Storage or your bag. Use Quick Transfer on /inventory-guide#home-storage to clear crates faster.
- 2
Back up your save — if your platform supports manual backup (Steam local files · Switch copy · Google Play cloud), do it before major homestead changes. See /help#save-safety for KI-01 (never quit during save).
- 3
Update to the latest patch before upgrading — Steam 1.1.45+ · Switch / Switch 2 1.1.46+ · Google Play 1.1.47+. Track versions on /events#patch-watch.
- 4
If your save fails to load after an upgrade — check Marvelous patch notes for a newer hotfix, then report via /help#report with your platform and patch version.
Confirmed (T1): Marvelous USA patch notes fixed these upgrade paths — we do not list them as current bugs. Prevention still costs little; watch /events#known-issues for new retail issues.

Post-Max Customization — Walls, Roofs & Doors
After upgrading your house to max level (4 upgrades), you unlock exterior customization. Official wiki (from community guides — prices unpublished) lists 50+ wall variants, 21 roof styles (12 normal + 5 vampire + 4 moss), 13 doors, 10 fences, 2 mailboxes, 5 interior trims, and 3 house styles — all customization prices marked "X" on wiki.
🧱 Walls · 50+ variants

🏠 Roofs · 21 styles
12 normal + 5 vampire + 4 moss roof designs (community guides).
🚪 Doors · 13 styles
Cosmetic front-door swaps — no functional difference reported (community guides).
🪴 Fences · mailboxes · trim

All customization counts come from demo data mining (community guides) — retail build may add or change options. Pair with decorating guide for interior placement rules and clutter stacking.

Building Placement & Rotation Rules
Large buildings cannot rotate — the barn, greenhouse, mill, and similar large structures are placed in a fixed orientation. This is consistent across multiple community sources and matches the rotation rules documented in the decorating guide.
Place large buildings first
Anchor your farm layout around large buildings — barn, greenhouse, mill — since they cannot be rotated or moved once placed. Then plan paths, crops, and decor around them.
Cannot move after placement
Large buildings are permanent fixtures — unlike furniture or clutter, you cannot reposition a barn or greenhouse in decorating mode. Choose your placement carefully.
Cross-reference decorating
Furniture rotates in 90° steps, but large buildings cannot rotate at all. See decorating rotation rules for the full placement mechanics.
⚠️ Plan before you build: Large buildings are a one-time placement decision — no move tool exists for structures like the barn or greenhouse. Scout your farm layout before committing to Howling Hammer orders.

Furniture Recipes — See /crafting-guide
Furniture recipes and blueprint costs are not listed yet. Neoseeker catalogs 819 furniture items (community guides) — too many to publish without verified retail data. Furniture and blueprint rows are not listed on this site yet.
Furniture blueprints, material-cost chains, and shop prices come from community guides — confirm in-game. We list mechanics and reported placement rules only.
🎨 Decorating guide
/decorating-guide covers reported placement rules: path brush, clutter stacking, 90° rotation, magic hover, and fish-tank decor — without publishing furniture prices.
🔨 Crafting guide
/crafting-guide maps confirmed workstations and themed furniture unlock chains — without publishing blueprint costs or material recipes.
🏪 Shops database
/shops holds 5 vendor rows with source labels — not furniture price tables. Rotating stock is reported but not verified per-item.
Decorating Mode Can't Access Storage
A top community complaint: while in decorating mode, you cannot access your home storage. Only items in your active bag are available for placement. Patch 1.1.41 added farm-wide House Storage access elsewhere — decorating-mode bag limits may still apply; verify in your retail build.
The pain point
You enter decorate mode to furnish your newly upgraded room, and realize the furniture you want is in storage — not your bag. You have to exit, grab it, and re-enter.
Prep your bag before decorating
After a house upgrade adds a new room, enter decorate mode only after you load your bag with the furniture and clutter you plan to place — storage is not reachable in decorate mode. Use Quick Transfer on /inventory-guide#home-storage to move items from crates before decorating. See also upgrade safety.
Crafting auto-pulls from storage
Unlike decorating, crafting stations can auto-extract materials from storage. Plan your crafting sessions separately from your decorating sessions — the two systems handle storage differently.
